{"id":299,"date":"2014-11-22T22:24:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-22T20:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.henningandersen.com\/?p=299"},"modified":"2014-11-26T17:48:12","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T15:48:12","slug":"shapeoko-2-tutorial-dominion-turntable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.henningandersen.com\/?p=299","title":{"rendered":"ShapeOko 2 tutorial &#8211; Dominion turntable"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Introduction<\/h3>\n<p>This is the first part of my tutorial on using the ShapeOko 2 for building a <a title=\"Dominion card game\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominion_%28card_game%29\" target=\"_blank\">Dominion<\/a> turntable looking a little like <a title=\"Dominion turntable\" href=\"http:\/\/dominionpro.com\/cart\/\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First of all you&#8217;ll need a CNC machine. I got mine from <a title=\"ShapeOko 2 on Inventables.com\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inventables.com\/technologies\/desktop-3d-carving-cnc-mill-kit-shapeoko-2\" target=\"_blank\">Inventables<\/a> and upgraded it with a <a title=\"Homepage of Kress Elektrowerkzeuge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kress-elektrik.com\" target=\"_blank\">Kress 800 FME spindle<\/a> (the ShapeOko forum has some nice posts on the bigger <a title=\"Discussion of Kress 1050 on the ShapeOko forum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shapeoko.com\/forum\/viewtopic.php?f=8&amp;t=722&amp;start=10\" target=\"_blank\">Kress 1050 spindle<\/a>). I posted some posts about <a title=\"ShapeOko 2 \u2013 Assembly \u2013 part 1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.henningandersen.com\/?p=176\" target=\"_blank\">building my ShapeOko 2<\/a> (<a title=\"ShapeOko build\" href=\"http:\/\/wyolum.com\/shapeoko-desktop-cnc-mill-build\/\" target=\"_blank\">here&#8217;s another one<\/a>). I&#8217;m very pleased with the performance of my new spindle. The stock spindle (the <a title=\"Homepage of Dremel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dremel.com\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Dremel <\/a>clone) wasn&#8217;t strong enough for continuous work in my opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is software: there is a lot of free and open source software out there for the purpose of drawing, generate g-code and sending the g-code to the ShapeOko 2. I find the following combination of software useful:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"OpenSCAD homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.openscad.org\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSCAD<\/a>: An open source CAD program. It doesn&#8217;t have a lot of fancy drag and drop features but it is solid and gets the job done. There is a lot of documentation and tutorials on the homepage for the beginner so don&#8217;t be scared by the programmatic approach (which suits a mathematician and programmer like me very well \ud83d\ude42 ).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"InkScape homepage\" href=\"https:\/\/inkscape.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Inkscape<\/a>: Another open source program for drawing SVG files which sometimes are handy when creating simple tasks for the ShapeOko 2. Again the homepage contains a lot of useful information for the beginner: tutorials, videos, blogs and a strong community.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"MakerCAM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.makercam.com\" target=\"_blank\">MakerCAM<\/a>: An on-line g-code generator. It&#8217;s simple to use and I use it for simple tasks. A good tutorial on how to use Makercam can be seen <a title=\"MakerCAM tutorial\" href=\"http:\/\/www.makercam.com\/tutorial.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and some more useful information can be found <a title=\"MakerCAM info\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shapeoko.com\/wiki\/index.php\/MakerCAM\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"FreeMILL\" href=\"http:\/\/mecsoft.com\/freemill\/\" target=\"_blank\">FreeMILL<\/a>: A free program from <a title=\"Homepage of MecSoft\" href=\"http:\/\/mecsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\">MecSoft<\/a> (thank you for making this excellent program free \ud83d\ude42 ). If you get fascinated by making things on a CNC machine (like me) then you should consider some of their non-free products (no, I don&#8217;t get paid for writing this!).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Grbl controller\" href=\"http:\/\/zapmaker.org\/projects\/grbl-controller-3-0\/\" target=\"_blank\">Grbl Controller<\/a>: A open source g-code sender for communicating with the CNC machine. There is also a tutorial on <a title=\"Grbl Controller on Raspberry Pi\" href=\"http:\/\/zapmaker.org\/raspberry-pi\/running-grbl-controller-on-raspberry-pi\/\" target=\"_blank\">how to run Grbl Controller<\/a> on a <a title=\"Homepage of Raspberry Pi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Raspberry Pi<\/a>. A list of g-code senders can be seen <a title=\"ShapeOko Wiki on communication\/control software\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shapeoko.com\/wiki\/index.php\/Communication_\/_Control\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last but not least: I needed a small utility for breaking down the g-code generated by FreeMILL so I made one (I will make it available for download later on). The thing is that FreeMILL generates g-code describing the surface of a solid (imported as STL) which often isn&#8217;t possible for the ShapeOko 2 to run directly because the cuts are simply too deep for the machine to handle in one run. Therefore, I created a small tool to break down the file from FreeMILL so it can be milled a few millimeters at a time.
